Blood on the Wattle draws together, in a single volume, most of the information about the massacres of Aboriginal people which has been recorded in books and journals. It also creates a broad-based level of awareness of the scale of the massacres of Aboriginal people so that this dimension of Australian history can become part of the Australian consciousness.

Taking Care of Australian Wildlife is an accessible and practical guide outlining the things we can do to make our backyards safer and friendlier to wildlife and how we can look after injured animals.Even Australians in the heart of cities have frequent encounters with wildlife and we are increasingly aware of how difficult it is for these animals to survive in our modified landscape. The book takes us into the world of various native animals, be they birds, lizards, frogs or mammals explaining their needs for shelter and food but it also instructs us how to safely and hygienically catch, handle and transport injured animals, how to feed them, house them, rehabilitate them and when and where to release them. A handbook such as this takes the anxiety out emergency situations. In this revised edition, the useful contact details for the Wildlife Authorities and Products and Manufacturers at the back of the book have been updated and new techniques included. There is also a listing of useful websites to further the readers knowledge.

40,000 years of Aboriginal history told through Aboriginal story-tellers.Australian Dreaming is the first Aboriginal history of the Australian continent and its people, as told by the Aboriginal story-tellers. Through traditional myths and legends, it gives an explanation of the formation of the landscape and creation of many outstanding geographical features. It recounts epic travels of the great Spirit Ancestors and tells how they created the animals and plants and gave birth to the earliest people of this land. It tells, also, how the Ancestors taught the Aboriginal people to live in harmony with nature and how to behave towards each other, thus setting the pattern of Aboriginal culture for over 40,000 years.

The first ever attack on Australia by a foreign power occurred at Darwin on 19 February 1942. To this day, Australia Under Attack remains the most reliable and accurate account of the Darwin bombings.Darwin was bombed in broad daylight by members of the Japanese Carrier Task Force which had been engaged at Pearl Harbour two months earlier. Not a single operational R.A.A.F fighter aircraft was available to meet this attack, imminent and inevitable though it was. At the time of the raid, Douglas Lockwood was a correspondent for the Melbourne Herald in Darwin. In the years that followed, he travelled the world interviewing survivors of and participants in the attack to produce the first complete reconstruction of that tragic day.

Blinky Bill tells the story of a naughty little koala, Blinky Bill, and his friends Splodge the Kangaroo and Wally the Wombat. Mischievous Blinky Bill creeps out of bed at night and runs into his friends at the edge of the river and tries his hand at fishing. Borrowing the farmer's boat is only the start of the adventure with the three friends. What will Mrs Koala and Nutsy say when they find Blinky Bill has been getting into more trouble? This Australian classic, as told by Dorothy Wall, has been reprinted with original illustrations and design. This book brings to life the much-loved and well-known Koala who stole the nation's heart.

There is a warmth, richness and humour about the poems of Banjo Paterson that has endeared them to generations of Australians. The Man from Snowy River, Mulga Bills Bicycle and The Geebung Polo Club are as well known to todays school children as they are to their parents and grandparents. The words Waltzing Matilda have, of course, become recognised in every part of the world as Australias own song. Combined with Pro Harts paintings, which capture the humour of some of these poems, the pathos and loneliness of others, the poems come alive once more.

In any part of Australia, almost in any company, the mere mention of Henry Lawsons name will bring an immediate response. Whether it gives rise to an anecdote or a recitation of a few lines of his verse or leads to a discussion of his place in Australian literature it will not pass unnoticed. The poems selected in this book have been enjoyed by more than seven generations, from the famous Facers in the Street which exposed the social injustices of the late 1800s, to The Sliprails and the Spur, described as possibly the most tender and most perfect of all his poems. Combined with Pro Harts paintings, which capture the humour of some of these poems, the pathos and loneliness of others, the poems come alive once more.

Revised and updated new edition of the popular and best selling handbook for all owner-builders.Home builders can contribute in many ways to reduce the use of products and processes that convert solid and liquid carbon containing materials into gaseous carbon. Everyone is now aware of the advantages of correctly oriented, well insulated houses with sensible ventilation and comfort systems. In this revised edition of the best selling complete guide to building your own home, George Wilkie updates and adds a new section on energy and environmental efficiency. An increasing key factor in building homes now is the environmental efficiency of the building function and its materials. The aim in many local authorities is to mitigate against factors that reduce the quality of the natural environment. This revised edition includes in detail the practical steps that owner builders need to take to ensure their building meets the aims of local regulations in environmental efficiency. The new section covers areas such as power sources, water saving, recycling materials, heating and lighting systems - this incorporates windows, choosing the aspect of the house, insulation systems and building structure.

Now available on the iBooks Store On Australia Day 1966, the Beaumont children Jane, Arnna and Grant disappeared from an Adelaide beach. Despite a large-scale police investigation and extensive media coverage, the case remains unsolved, bogged down by false leads and dead ends, and the Beaumont children were never seen again. In 2006, author Alan Whiticker, assisted by researcher Stuart Mullins, wrote the definitive account of the siblings disappearance in Searching for the Beaumont Children. Since the publication of that book, fresh leads have been sceptically received, until one family in particular presented a remarkable possibility that their family patriarch, a man with a peculiar predilection for satin, might have been involved. This book, The Satin Man, is the result of the ten years that followed, in which Whiticker and Mullins continued their hunt for the truth. It details everything uncovered about the new potential suspect, a man of wealth and position, and sheds incredible new light on this decades-old mystery with vital additional information on the unsolved case.

One of Australiarsquo;s most enduring and strangest mysteries, Swamp is a story of greed, deceit, the abuse of trustmdash;and murder. International journalist and acclaimed writer Richard Shears uncovers new evidence in the case of the mysterious disappearance of Margaret Clementmdash;the lsquo;Lady of the Swamp.rsquo; Rich, beautiful and well-educated, Margaret Clement was the belle of Melbourne society. With a legacy from her wealthy father, she and her sisters set up a mansion called Tullaree in the verdant pastures near the Tarwin River. With staff to run the property, they impressed the cream of Edwardian society with Japanese screens, tapestries and furniture from their trips abroad. Hit hard by the Great Depression and World War I, their finances declined and the ditches that kept the Tarwin River back collapsed through neglect. The lush paddocks sank under a vast swamp as the elderly belles clung to their beloved Tullaree. As the swamp rose, so too did the presence of opportunists, scammers, lawyersmdash;and a killer.

Australian War Dogs introduces you to manrsquo;s best friend on the battlefield, the fourlegged digger. Canine troops have served alongside Australiarsquo;s armed forces for decades. Valued for their loyalty, intelligence and devotion in battle, war dogs have helped relay messages through trenches and laid telephone wire; they have searched for the wounded and detected land mines. Nigel Allsopp, author of Cry Havoc: The History of Military Dogs, explores the stories of all Australian military dogs throughout our history and their different roles in the past and what role they could play in the future.

Born and raised in the culinary capital of Milan, Italy, it was destined that Luca would inherit the passion for food and culinary exploration of his homeland. Luca's interest and passion for food commenced with his mum and nona when he was just eight years old, taking his first few steps with them in the direction of becoming a chef. One of today's most successful chefs and food consultants, this is Luca's journey from Milan, Italy to Australia and beyond and how his food journey has made him one of the most sought after chefs. From the basics he learnt from his mother and grandmother to life in a different time in Milan, Italy and holidays at Lake Como. He tells of moving to London and then to Australia to establish himself to be one of the most credible chefs on Italian cuisine. This is Luca's second book.

Since time immemorial rivers have been the arteries of Australia's red heart and the river defined not just the landscape but also the people. Colin Whelan travelled to many memorable pubs along the Murray and its branch, the Edward. So many of these hotels are both rich in their own character and filed with other characters. They are a testament to the core values of the bush and to the continuing role pubs have in their communities. The stories of these pubs are inevitably intertwined with the river and with their yesterdays. Savouring the pubs, enjoying them and soaking them in, necessarily involves swimming deeply in their histories and refreshing in their waters. These are their stories, the unforgettable characters of Australia and it's waterways.

'Australia’s Natural Disasters' tells many stories of the devastation that nature has wreaked on our wild country and its people. From the agonies of droughts and oods to the shocks of earthquakes and bush fires, Australia is a country famed as much for its ferocious natural hazards as for its rich environment. Freak weather has caused plane crashes and shipwrecks. On Christmas Eve 1974 Darwin pubs were bursting with festive people joking that ‘cyclones never hit Darwin’. Cyclone Tracy was expected to be another ‘near miss’. But in the early hours of Christmas Day the slow-moving tropical cyclone tore the city apart, with sustained winds of 200 kilometres per hour, and Darwin became another victim of nature. Cyclone Tracy is only one of the many extreme weather events that Australia has been subjected to. Australia’s Natural Disasters tells many stories of the devastation nature has wreaked on our wild country. From the agonies of droughts and floods to the shock occurrence of earthquakes and bushfires, Australia is a country famed as much for its ferocious natural hazards as it is for its rich environment. Freak weather has caused plane crashes and shipwrecks and even been blamed for the disappearance of a prime minister. 'Australia’s Natural Disasters' is a fascinating chronicle of the ferocity of nature and the dramatic effects it has had on this country and its people – from the mid-1800s to the seemingly more frequent extreme-weather events of the 2000s. Disasters covered include the bushfires of 2019 and 2020 , Cyclone Yasi and Cyclone Tracy, The Black Saturday 2009 Bushfires and the devastation along with the Queensland Floods and the 2021 Floods, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the mass rescue at Bondi Beach, Dust Storms of 2009 and the devastating hail storm that struck Sydney's East and much more. All this illustrated by on-the-spot photos of Australia’s natural disasters and their consequences.

As a child growing up in Zimbabwe and South Africa, Lovemore Ndou experienced poverty and the injustices of the apartheid system, witnessed atrocities committed against his family and community, was a victim of police brutality and saw his best friend gunned down in a street protest. Yet, against all odds, Lovemore succeeded and rose through the ranks to become a boxing world champion and then a successful lawyer, while making Australia his home. In 'Tough Love' Lovemore Ndou evocatively recalls the many challenges he has overcome on his journey and his ultimate triumph through hard work, dedication, resilience and persistence.

Most people know Pat Webster as the incredibly successful trainer of Happy Clapper, the first horse in history to win the ‘big three’ Randwick miles. However his life was anything but easy. His fledgling career as a jockey was cut tragically short after a fall during a race and, after starting a family with the love of his life, to almost losing his son to the ravages of drug abuse. With strength, wit and perseverance Pat turned his misfortune into success: a winning stable, and a life-changing role as a mentor for young jockeys, trainers and stable hands. Don’t Die Wondering - The Pat Webster Story is a tale of a man who never gave up, who made something from nothing, and used his experience and knowledge to change the lives of those around him. Pat Webster is determined to give back to the sport that has given him so much. An accredited drugs and alcohol counsellor with Racing industry, Pat mentors young jockeys about the demands of their career and the perils of early success. Pat is also an ambassador for the Racing Mates initiative which supports country racing communities struggling to survive in the most unforgiving of sports. A unique Australia Story from a dirt poor upbringing in the country to a successful trainer along the way he has rubbed shoulders with millionaires and battlers. New format

For decades Helen Baldwin has been painting outback Australia and the Aboriginal people. Her travels have taken her throughout western New South Wales and to Alice Springs, Darwin, Yuendumu, Napperby, Mbunghara, Papunya, Kintore, Docker River, Areyonga, Maryvale and countless places in between. Through her friendship with Michael Ellis and his wife Lizzie, a full-blood Aborigine of the Ngaanatjarra tribe, Helen has been taken to special areas that few white people have ever seen. The natural affinity for the Central Australian desert and its people felt by Helen is visible in her artistic work. She is able to see through the incongruous Western clothing, tangled hair and ubiquitous dust to the flame that gave birth to one of the purest forms of spirituality ever articulated. . At night, telling Dreamtime stories by the campfire, an ancient dignity lights the eyes of the old people. It is the essence of this message that Helen Baldwin captures in her paintings of the Aboriginal people: wisdom, simplicity, spontaneity and grace. Children of the Dreamtime presents a vivid picture of the Aboriginal people of central Australia, their way of life and their environment. In her work Artist Helen Bladwin shows us the beauty she perceives in the Australian outback and the people who first made it their home.

This is the 50,000-year story of the Australian Aboriginal rock art of Arnhem Land. Aboriginal rock art, as practised in Arnhem Land, is the world's longest continuing art tradition. It is a tradition that is not merely decorative, but provides a "journey in time" - a pictorial record of the longest surviving culture on earth. Occurring at thousands of different sites, and of many different styles, the rock paintings of this region date from at least 30,000 years ago, and some may have been in place as early as 50,000 years ago. The oldest galleries pre-date the Hall of Bulls and Lascaux in France. This book explores the depth and complexity of this art tradition and gives insight into the aesthetic and cultural worlds of the people who created it. 'Journey in Time' has been written and illustrated with the permission of the Gagudju people, the traditional owners of the land.

Dogs want to be with us and to please us. They make good mates. They make us laugh. They keep us healthy and supply endless cuddles. Their love is unconditional, and they never judge us. They ask for little in return – kindness, a comfy bed, exercise and regular meals. With a dog at your side, you have an amazing friend. But some dogs do a little bit more. They aren’t always dogs who make the frontpage news with heroics. Instead, they go about their lives quietly and willingly doing their best to help humans, young and old, in a variety of sometimes surprising ways that make a huge difference. With a Dog’s Love features 16 inspirational and uplifting stories for the young reader, complete with photographs, about dogs who are quiet heroes. The stories of these incredibly special dogs celebrate the strong bond between dog and human and the amazing impact dogs can have on our lives.

Revised and updated edition. Smoking and Southern style barbecuing is hugely popular right now. Just throwing a few sausages on the barbecue days are gone and slow cooking with the smoky flavour is very much in. Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket is very on trend. Step by step recipes. Book also includes sides and deserts. Strong cover. Author Jeremy Schmid is one of Auckland’s leading chefs and is know as the master of sausage and cured meats and in this book he shares this passion. First edition sold 3,000 copies.

There have been few more tenacious players in the game of rugby league than Tom Raudonikis. An inspirational captain who often took on players twice his size, his whole-hearted attitude on the playing field earned him the name ' Tom Terrific' in the 1970s. Tommy played 201 games for the Magpies during the decade, as well as winning the Rothman's Medal for Best and Fairest Player of the 1972 season. Raudonikis went on to play 29 Tests, including 9 World Cup appearance, during his international career, but his efforts for the New South Wales Blues and at club level were equally inspirational. Extremely competitive, both on and off the field, Raudonikis regularly delivered the goods when called upon to produce that ‘something extra’.\ In 1995, Raudonikis returned to Sydney as coach of the Magpies after a long career in Brisbane. In only his second year as coach of the club, Tommy led Wests back into the play-offs in the 20-team ARL competition. The following year he coached the NSW Blues to State of Origin success. Controversial, both on and off the field, there was only one Tommy Raudonikis.

In the early morning of 16 October 1930, Oscar Garden taxied his tiny Gipsy Moth across London’s Croydon aerodrome and, with a wave of his hand to the only person there to farewell him, took off. His plan was to fly to Australia, which was sheer madness as he only had a mere 39 flying hours under his belt. When he landed at Wyndham 18 days later no one was expecting him. However, his flight – the third fastest after veteran aviators Bert Hinkler and Charles Kingsford – captured the world’s imagination. With a lack of fanfare, he had given the impression he had just set out on a short pleasure trip, instead of the most formidable feat in aerial navigation. The press dubbed him ‘Sundowner of the Skies’. Unlike most of his contemporaries who died in crashes, Oscar survived and went on to a career in commercial aviation. He ended up as Chief Pilot of Tasman Empire Airways, the forerunner of Air New Zealand, but left suddenly in 1947. He never flew a plane again. Sundowner of Skies is a deeply personal study told by his daughter Mary Garden. This book is her journey of discovery. Until recently, she knew little about her father’s life as an aviator. As well as digging up his amazing flying adventures, she uncovers his tumultuous childhood in north Scotland, the ghosts of his past, which he could not escape, and shines a light on the intergenerational trauma that impacted her own life. Harry Gordon was a businessman under extreme pressure who decided to faked his own death. When his empty dinghy was found floating in a river on the North Coast of New South Wales an extraordinary chain of events were set in place. His family assumed he had drowned and Harry went on to create a new life. What could go wrong ? What followed was a roller-coaster ride that lasted for four years. Across different countries and many highs and lows he continued living a fake life before he was finally arrested and spent 15 months in prison. This biography is his story in his own words: his thoughts and plans, his dealings with the law, his life lived under another identity, his deception of family and friends and his flight to Spain, England and then New Zealand, where he remarried. Funny, entertaining and an interesting tale of a decision and it’s consequences.

In this age of increasing hostility towards chemical control of the food we eat, Companion Planting is the ideal guide to working with nature.Companion Planting is a notebook of gardening tips compiled from Brenda Little's observations as well as suggestions from like-minded gardeners. Entertaining and often anecdotal, Brenda's notes are arranged alphabetically, allowing the reader to easily search for a particular plant or garden pest. Her summary of good and bad garden companions is a useful and quick reference tool for gardeners planting beds or containers of vegetables or herbs. In this age of increasing hostility towards chemical control of the food we eat, Companion Planting is the ideal guide to working with nature, to produce cabbages that squeak with health and beans that snap like gunshot.

The poetry selected for this collection reveals Paterson's love and appreciation for the Australian bush and its people. It contains not only widely published and quoted poems such as 'On Kiley's Run' and 'Clancy of The Overflow', but also lesser known poems such as 'The Uplift' and 'The Wind's Message'. The colour plates of works by Australian artists subtly illustrate the images evoked by the poems.

Tried and trusted recipes contributed by experienced housewives and cookery experts The Green and Gold Cookery Book was first compiled in 1923 as a fundraising initiative of King's College (now King's Campus, Pembroke School, South Australia). In 1999 Pembroke School celebrated 25 years since its foundation and the 75th anniversary of King's College. This edition of the book is published in acknowledgement of those milestone events.

This 55th anniversary edition of the Colin Thiele classic is being released to coincide with a new major movie remake of Storm Boy starring Jai Courtney and Geoffrey Rush. Storm Boy is the timeless story of Mike "Storm Boy" Kingley who rescues three pelican chicks after their mother is shot. One of the birds, Mr Percival, forms a very special bond with the boy which brings into focus the conflict between his lifestyle in the remote Coorong of South Australia and the external pressures of society including his schooling. Treasured by generations of children, this is a heartwarming- tale about unusual friendship and unconditional love.

For perhaps fifty thousand years the Aboriginal people have lived, and lived well, in Australia. They have developed a unique knowledge of native plants and a deep understanding of the value of many animal products. Bush Food is an exploration of these traditional skills and a compendium of the kinds of foods eaten by Aborigines. It indicates how food is caught or gathered, hunted or picked, how it is prepared and cooked, and what nutritional value it has. It considers, too, the use of natural products in traditional Aboriginal herbal medicine.

In his third collection of well crafted, approachable dishes, Jeremy Schmid showcases recipes for cooking outdoors on barbecues, spits and open fires. In the classic style he revealed in Bangers to Bacon and Smoked, he shows new methods to create similarly effortless dishes. There are plenty of tips and techniques with recipes for rubs, brines and marinades, along with sauces and homemade condiments. Jeremy describes how to build a traditional spit roast, a marvellous way to entertain a large gathering, and where the long slow cooking ensures a mouthwatering succulent result.

This practical book identifies more than 140 species. No group of plants is so characteristically Australian as the Eucalypts, yet individual species are by no means easy to identify. This practical book, now revised and updated, identifies more than 140 species commonly grown in or seen around cities, regardless of their state of origin. For each major species the plant is described, the range given, diagnostic features are summarised, related species are discussed, and their horticultural requirements outlined.

Bringing Back the Bush: The Bradley method of bush regeneration. The Bradley sisters, Joan and Eileen, lived in the Sydney suburb of Mosman and were the originators of bush regeneration worldwide. The method of bush regeneration they developed became known as 'the Bradley method'. It is a deceptively simple and adaptable approach to bush regeneration that is based on helping the bush to help itself. Its benefits are long lasting and it works for both small and large areas. Bringing Back the Bush outlines the basic principles and rules that underscore the Bradley method, and it provides the practical techniques required to put them into practice.

Native Trees and Shrubs of South-Eastern Australia embraces an area that stretches from the Flinders and Mt Lofty Ranges in South Australia, across Victoria and southern New South Wales to the NSW South Coast. It records the land and its vegetation in a scientifically accurate, but accessible, style. Virtually all species of native trees and larger shrubs in this area are described, and their occurrences are related to the features of their environment, events of the past, geology, landforms, soil, and climatic conditions. The brief descriptions of places of special interest, as well as the eight regional 'guide-lists' that cover the coast, hills and ranges, high-mountain country, and various inland areas, assist anyone exploring such regions to identify the trees and shrubs.

In this completely new and updated version of 'The Compost Book', David Taylor divulges the secrets of good compost making.Did you know that charcoal makes a great slow-release plant food? Or that yoghurt speeds up compost activity and that chamomile keeps a compost heap smelling sweet? You'd be surprised what you can throw into a compost bin. But it's not just a haphazard affair, the best composts have a balance of nitrogen to carbon, acid to alkaline and temperature. Some are fast and some are slow, some are tossed and some are cooked under cover. This book is for those with a backyard and those in the city with a small space who want to make a difference.

An essential guide and invaluable resource for anyone interested in herbal medicine, Australian flora and the indigenous Australian culture.Plants have been used for medicinal purposes since earliest recorded history and Australia?s varied flora provided Aboriginal people with medicines. With the arrival of Europeans much of this knowledge was overtaken by modern drugs and techniques but today there is a revival of interest in traditional medicines. Australian Medicinal Plants covers the Aboriginal use of native plants and explains how the first settlers learned from the Aborigines their medicinal values. There is information on nearly 500 individual plants, how they were used, what their known pharmacological constituents are, where to find them and how to prepare remedies. The species are helpfully arranged in chapters according to their use: for fevers, painkillers, antiseptics and digestive disorders for instance.

Mulch is truly miraculous stuff! It saves water, protects and enriches the soil, suppresses weeds, promotes healthy plants, and to top it off, much of it is free. The range of materials used to make mulch is enormous and many of them are just lying around begging to be used. Updated and revised, The Mulch Book tells you all about mulch: what it is, where to get it, how to use it and how it works. The main part of the book is the A-Z of Mulch, which describes many different mulch materials and their uses, together with mulching techniques. There are tips on how to mulch different parts of your garden and which mulches to use for a smart look in small spaces. This little book, delightfully illustrated, will show you how to make gardening easier. The mulch does the hard work, leaving more time for you to relax and enjoy your garden.

Few animals rival spiders in their diversity of forms and colour, ecological abundance and importance, and complexity of behaviours. Spiders have inspired awe amongst arachnologists and naturalists and at the same time are feared by many. The Australian continent and its offshore islands and territories harbour an estimated diversity of some 8,500 species in 850 genera and 79 families; however, only about 3,500 species in about 650 genera are currently described. The smallest Australian spiders measure less than one millimetre long when fully grown and the largest easily exceed the span of a large man's hand. Spiders are mostly terrestrial arthropods, but some specialists inhabit the intertidal zones of the Australian shores. The local fauna also includes peculiar subterranean representatives, including the enigmatic Tasmanian and Nullarbor Cave Spiders, in addition to tiny, pale and blind hunters in the underground voids, fissures and crevices of this ancient continent. A Guide to the Spiders of Australia is the first comprehensive guide to Australian spiders to cover all 79 families that occur in this country. Almost 400 colour photos of live spiders and about 50 images of their webs are complemented by 50 microscopic shots taken in the laboratory to illustrate the very smallest of spiders. A number of scientific drawings clarify particular features of spiders.

What in the world is a weed? The dictionary will tell you it is a plant out of place. In The Wonderous World of Weeds you will discover that the perceived weeds thatgrow around us hold special significance and wonderful medicinal values. We have plants growing all around us that have so much culinary and holistic potential and can be used as teas, decoctions, poultices, compresses, ointments, creams along with syrups and lozenges. Their medicinal uses can help relieve itches, get rid of cold sores, or help with coughs and colds, etc. Not many people realise that are plants growing all around us that we donrsquo;t realise have so much potential. Weeds also have culinary uses and there are recipes included. They are also good companions in the garden for vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers, and can tell you about the quality of your soil. For example, weeds are good indicators of an acid soil; soil lacking in humus or high in nitrogen; etc. The book will feature 100 common world-wide week, and each plant will include: A full description and identification together with a photograph; distribution, ie where they typically grow; a list of their common names; what uses they have and much more. Pat Collins was brought up on dairy farms where she developed her deep love of the land and the understanding of naturersquo;s laws. Her dearest memories of her youth are her barefoot hikes around the sandstone hills with the farm dogs and the rich smell of wattle in the air. Her Weed Workshop is one of her most popular ones as Pat loves to share her extensive knowledge of useful weeds that grow in your area. At home she collects her weeds to make many of her medicines that she uses at her Practice. The Total Health and Education Centre was opened 18 years ago and she runs a busy business, employing three receptionists and renting out many rooms, as well asmanufacturing all our own products that are sold world wide.

A comprehensive guide to the country’s butterflies covering everything from the eye-catching Common Jezabel and Ulysses Butterfly, to the gigantic Cairns Birdwing, to the more cryptic Blues and Skippers. The key features that separate this book from all other butterfly field guides are firstly that all the images are of live butterflies (compared with other guides, which often use specimens), and secondly that there are large numbers of images documenting the different life stages (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, etc), plus images of male and female butterflies where they differ significantly in appearance, and also pictures of host plants, which are often an important factor in locating the butterflies. On average each of the 350+ butterfly species included have one page of coverage, although some of the larger and more well-known species have up to three pages and some of the smaller species are set at two or three species to a page. There is a distribution map for each species. The sturdy plastic cover and compact layout make the book ideal for use in the field, while the target readership is anyone with an interest in butterflies.

This is one of the latest titles in our exciting new series of concise field guides. It is the ultimate keep-in-your-pocket guide to Australian spiders. It may be diminutive in size but it punches well above its weight in terms of usefulness, being packed with more than 200 images of all the species most likely to be encountered in Australia, including iconic spiders such as the huntsman, redback and funnel-webs. For each of the 150+ main species accounts there is at least one photograph for identification and a brief written account listing key ID features, range and habitat, food and behaviour. The book covers all of the most common and widespread species likely to be encountered in Australia, along with some of the more unusual and scarce species to look out for. The easy-to-use layouts and small size make it ideal for taking on days out or walks in the bush. It is ideal for beginners or wildlife-watchers of an intermediate level, and also for children as a first book on spiders. In short this is a beginner’s guide to Spiders of Australia which is accessible the broadest possible audience. It will cover about 150-170 species, with each species given one page (1 image - possibly 2 with an inset pic - and c. 80-90 words per species) or one spread (2 images and c.120 words per species).

Whether you're an amateur insect enthusiast, a student or an entomologist, this completely revised new edition of A Field Guide to Insects in Australia will help you to identify insects from all the major groups. With more photographs, species and up-to-date information, it will enable you to differentiate between a dragonfly and a damselfly or a cricket and a grasshopper. You'll find cockroaches, termites, praying mantises, beetles, cicadas, moths, butterflies, ants, bees and many more. More than 600 colour photographs show the insects in their natural habitats, while more than 50 line drawings clearly illustrate the differences where identification is tricky. Paul Zborowski is an entomologist and photographer based in Canberra. He has studied and photographed insect behaviour around the world and now concentrates on maintaining a macro photo collection which can be visited at www.close-up-photolibrary.com. Paul has revised this edition and continued the legacy of his esteemed friend and colleague, Ross Storey. Ross Storey spent most of his professional life studying, collecting and curating insects for the University of Queensland and the Queensland Department of Primary Industries. He described many new species and wrote scientific papers, especially on native dung beetles, on which he is a recognised world authority. Before his death in 2008, he worked as a taxonomist and curator of the QDPI's Mareeba insect collection, one of Australia's premier collections of tropical insects.

This book is intended to help gardeners avoid garden problems and to deal efficiently with any that do occur. The hundreds of pests and diseases included in this book do not all occur in the same geographic area or in the same season. In fact years may pass before most of them are of serious concern in a particular garden. Some insects have been included only to show that although commonly seen they do very little damage and should be accepted as part of the friendly garden fauna. The A-Z of Plant Care section outlines appropriate culture for a wide range of plants and indicates their most common pest and disease problems. It also suggests some solutions. More information about most of these problems, together with coloured photographs can be found in the Pest or Disease section

Quite simply one of the best collections of images of Australian birds ever compiled. This illustrated book showcases beautiful photography which depicts the country’s wild birds in their natural habitats. There is a strong focus on endemic bird species and families, while the authors have specialised in portraits and behavioural shots. Subjects range from soaring albatrosses and stooping raptors, to rarely seen views of skulking emu-wrens and quail-thrushes. Chapters focus on habitats such as bushland, coast and gardens, and on aspects of bird life and behaviour such as breeding, feeding and flight. Accompanying text enhances the photos by outlining facts regarding ID, behaviour, the circumstances in which the image was taken, photography tips, and much more besides.

This new title in New Holland’s award-winning Green Guides series investigates the ever-popular subject of Australia’s sea fishes, which include familiar species such as the anemonefishes, parrotfishes, wrasses, sharks and many more. It contains fact panels covering interesting aspects of the subject, including what these fishes eat, where they live, how they reproduce, and why certain species pack a very poisonous punch, with some of the strongest toxins known in the animal kingdom. The many beautiful images are taken from the author’s own collection, which has been built up over many decades.

Now in its fifth edition, the phenomenally successful A Guide to Flowers and Plants of Tasmania has been in print since 1981. This beautifully illustrated guide has been extensively revised, with an additional 30 species, updated text and many new pictures, some of which are full page, adding even more vibrancy and interest to the book. It is an invaluable companion and reference for bushwalkers, tourists and all those interested in the Tasmanian countryside. For ease of identification, each of the 300 species described is illustrated by one or more photographs. The text includes all the information necessary to help identify the plants: size, description, flowering time, appearance of the flowers and other parts of the plant, and the type of habitat where you may expect to find them. The book also includes an introduction to the vegetation of Tasmania, diagrams of leaf shapes and the parts of a flower, and a glossary of common terms.

One third of the world’s nearly 400 species of parrots are threatened with extinction or already close to it. These include some of the most spectacular and iconic bird species on the planet, such as the Hyacinth Macaw from South America, the Kakapo from New Zealand and the Orange-bellied Parrot from Australia. This book takes a detailed look at 30 parrot species and explains why they are endangered and the steps being taken to conserve them.

Ok, so you can tell a pigeon from a seagull but what about a Magpie from a Currawong? Or a native Noisy Miner from an introduced Indian or Common Myna? There are over 750 species of birds in Australia, so it’s not surprising that most of us give up trying to know them all. Know Your Birds narrows the field to Australia’s best known birds, those you are most likely to see around our towns and cities. Between the pages of this book, no matter where you live in Australia you will find a great many familiar birds. Each of the 80 entries features a photographic portrait of a well-known bird. From these alone you will be able to identify most of the birds that you see. The accompanying text is all about how these birds live: their foibles, habits, social lives and domestic arrangements. You’ll be amazed at just how different from one another their lifestyles are.

As one of Australia’s finest wildlife artists, the late great Peter Slater needs no introduction to natural history enthusiasts. He has been publishing books celebrating the country’s wildlife for many decades, not least the renowned Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds. For Australian Nature from the Heart Peter teamed up with the equally talented Sally Elmer to produce a remarkable collection of images covering all aspects of Australian natural history. Subjects include various species of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and much more, with these creatures often portrayed with backdrops of stunning Australian landscapes, from desert and bush to rainforest and wetlands. The accompanying text gives fascinating background information and insight into species both common and rare, which the authors have encountered on their extensive travels around Australia.

A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia has been the most comprehensive field guide available on the subject since the first edition was published in 2003. As new species are discovered, known ranges extended and higher quality images become available, updated editions of the book have been written to reflect these changes. This new edition adds 92 reptile species, mostly comprising new descriptions since the publication of the fifth edition, plus 10 species that come with the inclusion of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This sixth edition of the book includes images, descriptions and maps for all 1,109 species of Australian reptiles described up until the end of June 2020. Some of these are pictured in life for the first time, and many are represented by several images to depict geographical and sexual differences. The book features easy-to-use diagnostic illustrations to explain anatomical features, a comprehensive glossary, and the more significant reptile habitats are pictured. Each species has a clear and concise text description to aid identification, with diagnostic differences from confusion species given in bold font. Each species has a distribution map and image(s) on the facing page. For ease of use there are indexes to scientific and common names. Designed as a field guide, with a sturdy plastic cover and compact layout, the target readership for this book is anyone with an interest in reptiles, whether scientists or amateurs. It is regarded as the standard reference guide for professionals working in the field and is also popular with general naturalists.

World War II was the biggest and most destructive war in history. For two centuries wars had grown ever larger, with the use of more terrible weapons and rising casualties, culminating in the cataclysmic global events of 1939–45. And then, quite suddenly, large international wars have all but disappeared. What caused wars to grow in size to such an extent and then shrink so precipitously? Is this a permanent state of affairs or could big wars make a comeback? Lawyer and historian John P Storey explores these questions by looking at the evolution of military technology and tactics over the long history of warfare. From ancient bronze spears and chariots to World War II tanks and warplanes, from the nuclear weapons of the Cold War to the drones and robotics of the future, the changes in our methods of waging war has had, and will continue to have, a major impact on their size and destructiveness. The sobering conclusion Storey makes is that, based on past trends and the weapons in the pipeline for the future, there is a much higher risk of there being much bigger wars in the coming decades
